Hollywood, the Academy Award… It looks like there is no discrimination there, doesn`t it? Every year, a lot of women, including those with Asian or African backgrounds, win a lot of awards. However, not everything is that simple. What do you think, when was the last time when a woman won the Academy Award for the Best Picture or the Best Directing? We bet it is a difficult task.

It looks though like 2021 has changed the situation a lot. For the last 100 years, the Academy Award in this category was given to a woman only once. In 2021, it happened for the second time. Well, let us check the details though.

Chloe Zhao and Her Nomadland

Russian TV Company sends the warmest congratulations to Chloe Zhang, the winner of the Academy Award for the Best Picture and the Best Directing in 2021. She received awards for her movie Nomadland, a real masterpiece that was very positively received by both critics and viewers.

With it, Chloe Zhang becomes the second woman who got this award during the last 100 years of the ceremony existence. The first woman to receive the award was Kathryn Bigelow with her movie “The Hurt Locker”. Kathryn was awarded it in 2010, so the trend is evident.

The Golden Globe Award for the Best Director was also won by Chloe Zhao. She is the second woman to win it, and the first one was Barbara Joan with her movie Yeti. It happened in 1983.

If you check what effect Nomadland used to make on the views, you will see that such a success isn`t something that comes by accident. Before the Academy Award, the movie has won awards from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, and the Directors Guild of America awards. It is impressive, indeed.
